Microsoft and Alphabet reported quarterly earnings that beat Wall Street's expectations. On Thursday, just off the heels of Meta's mixed first-quarter results that caused a dip on Wall Street, Microsoft and Alphabet just proved that there's money to be made off of artificial intelligence. However, the executive also made sure to highlight the contributions of Google Cloud, which now comes with generative AI services through Google's AI model, Gemini. Investors appeared pleased with Microsoft's and Alphabet's quarterly performance, which gave the companies a stock surge, as Wall Street continues to nurse a hangover from Meta's first-quarter report. A Tesla short-seller named two auto stocks that he believes have the potential to deliver 100% upside for investors. Lekander, who holds a short position in Tesla shares, has said the EV carmaker could "go bust" while its stock could fall to $14. His comments came after Tesla reported 386,810 vehicle deliveries in the first quarter, significantly below the lowest market estimates . Valuing AI in auto Lekander also dismissed the notion that Tesla's self-driving software justifies its high valuation, noting that the product is still in early research and development. "I thus remain massively bullish quality auto stocks, Stellantis and Mercedes are my favourites as they are well run and fully investor owned," Lekander told CNBC via email.

Berlin CNN —For old-school connoisseurs of the automobile — usually men — driving means operating a beloved vehicle by touch, with three pedals underfoot and a shift stick at hand. Well, Zen or not, the day of manual transmissions is speeding to an end — and this layman is shedding no tears. For one, the oft-repeated benefits of a stick shift over an automatic have been redundant now for years. For South Africa as a whole, three quarters of its vehicle production is exported. At the same time, South Africa's policy paper on EVs is two years behind schedule. "The train (EV shift) is a global one, and it's leaving the station. If South Africa doesn't jump onto the train, it runs the risk of being left behind," Mark Raine, co-CEO Mercedes-Benz Cars South Africa, told Reuters in an interview. Specifically, South Africa will need to boost local demand by cutting the import tax for EVs, setting up large-scale EV charging stations and investing in skills needed for the new ecosystem that EVs bring, he said.

Several Republican presidential candidates have gone on the attack against unions in response to the United Auto Workers' strike, despite strong support for organized labor among the American public. Sen. Tim Scott on Monday said striking workers should be fired, saying he would emulate President Ronald Reagan who terminated more than 11,000 striking air traffic controllers in 1981. Haley said President Joe Biden had "emboldened" the UAW by proclaiming he is the "most pro-union president in American history." The UAW strike also enjoys solid support with 54% of U.S. adults approving the work stoppage, according to a Morning Consult poll. The autoworkers strike could escalate ahead of the Republican primary debate next week at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.
